Mindless or careless expenditure of one’s own time or resources

Laurie was grabbing her leftovers from Pattywack’s as she watched her father come out of the apartment building. “That’s everything,” he stated, having just dropped off several bags of snacks upstairs.

She reached her arms around him and the two hugged. After releasing their embrace she patted him on the stomach a couple of times.

“What was that for?” he asked.

“For luck.”

Laurie’s dad squinted his eyes in confusion. “Ok, thanks,” he said as he got into his car. “Oh, by the way, I left some money on the fridge if you wanna get delivery. You girls have fun tonight. But not too much fun if you know what I’m saying.”

“Oh, Dad, gosh,” Laurie replied as he drove away. She walked over to the shared mailbox of her dad’s apartment complex and opened the box marked 304 with her key. She then grabbed the contents and made her way towards her dad’s unit and went inside. As she ascended the stairs to his third-floor apartment, she shuffled through the assortment of deliveries.

“Junk. Junk. Bills. Bills. Oh, whoops.” Laurie noticed that one of the pieces of mail belonged to her dad’s neighbor. His name escaped her at the moment, but she was almost certain it wasn’t Current Resident. That reminded her of a boy she had been talking to who claimed he was going to change his name to Current Resident. He thought that would be a great way to get other people’s mail. Laurie had to gingerly explain to him that wasn’t exactly how it worked.
