Narcissism – (nahr-suh-siz-em)
Psychological desire to be the center of attention often at the expense of others
The cool, fresh air was a relief as Josh Young stepped onto the front patio at Holidaze. His ears were ringing from the music that had been blasting in his face for the last couple of hours. Most of the crowd was still inside, but there were a few people out there with him; smoking, drinking, chatting, or just getting away from the sardine-like feeling of the packed music hall. His girlfriend, Kim, had never made it to the show. He imagined she had fallen asleep on the couch watching re-runs, and the thought caused him to yawn. He stretched his arms up into the air, realizing that Friday night had become Saturday morning an hour ago. Josh was exhausted, and the beer he held in his hand wasn’t doing him any favors.
The doors to the music hall opened and the sounds of electronic dance music came blaring out, along with a couple of college students from Princemoore University. He nodded at them as they walked passed, but their attention appeared to be on the next destination. Several more groups of people started to leave, and he realized these must be Caleb Brown fans. His band’s set had wrapped up just after midnight, and the post-show dance music didn’t seem to have captured their interest. Josh had lucked out earlier when a parking spot became available just as he pulled into the lot. Instead of walking blocks to the nearest meter, he just had to head around back to get to his car.
